Sailor Moon Crystal: Episode 1- Review & First Thoughts

SMep1

The moment I have been waiting for is finally here, and the little girl in me is screaming. I awed at the new animated scenes from my childhood, and recognized the familiarity.

The episode opens up the scenes from Usagi’s dreams of the moon kingdom and of a Princess and ,from what we can assume, a Prince. We are then quickly introduced to our main character Usagi ( Sailor moon of course) being her normal klutzy insecure self, and of course her furry friend Luna. Salior V is also plays a very big part in the episode even though she is mentioned in the background for now. Usagi envy’s the popularity and freedom Sailor V seems to have, and she wishes she could have that power. We are also introduced to Tuxedo Mask and Motoki, the two potential love interests, and “The Bad Guys” which I am sure we will see later.

The story follows closely to that of the manga and, for returning viewers, that of the first original episode. An evil source is trying to obtain the Silver Crystal, so is Tuxedo Mask. Someone from the evil side of things conjures up a being to take over a jewelry shop to feed off the power of young girls. Usagi then obtains her powers from Luna and becomes a magical girl! The story plays out by Usagi saving the day abd defeating the demon that has taken over the store and everyone returns to normal. The episode end with a hint that we may be introduced to Sailor Mercury.

Thoughts

No. The first episode isn’t anything impressive.

When Sailor Moon came out in the 90’s it really reformed everything about the “Magical girl” genre. SO as long as you slapped on a salior outfit via transformation scene people were impressed. The manga and even the first run of the show was kind of dull in the beginning too, but what Sailor Moon Crystal’s first episode did so well was hint at what is to come. The first thing you saw in this episode was the freaking moon kingdom. We know nothing about that yet, and Usagi’s recurring dream also bring to light that there is something bigger here.

The first episode gave just us something to build off of. It also really cleaned up everything I remembered about the series. The animation and art style play true to the original series, and I am excited for some awesome fight scenes guys. So those of you who have only heard of Sailor Moon … cause who hasn’t, and are just now getting into the hype, I promise you the best is yet to come.

As I, or Tyler, reviews this series we will try to keep it as if this is our first time ever being exposed to Sailor Moon. When giving our thoughts we may compare the old and new series, but will try to keep spoilery details out.

Free! Eternal Summer: Episode 1 – Review & First Thoughts

FreeETep1

Water Is Alive.

My favorite hit of last summer is back! A whole year has has past for this anime it is feels like it never went away!

The new series sets it self up nicely. The Iwatobi Swim Club is desperate as ever for new recruits, while Rin has been promoted to Captian of the Samezuka Academy Swim Team. Also ‘Ole Captain Goro has bought and rebuilt the childhood swim club of our familiar cast, and has let Iwatobi use it during the winter season to prepare.

After the usual swim competition between Haru and Rin that leads to a tie, The gang meets (Rin … kind of forced) back up at Iwatobi to reveal their opening of their pool. Far too cold to swim, Rin then reveals his dreams of swimming professionally is determined by nationals this year. The episode then ends with us, and Rin, being introduced to a new character, Sousoke. Will this be a new rival for Rin ?

Thoughts

This was the best possible way to bring back the series for another summer. It felt as if the series never ended. In away I am glad we are not watching the usual “Rin’s battle against Haru”, and we get to see that the characters have moved past that… but of course we will see some friendly competition.

The series is setting it self up for some interesting conflict. Will Haru ever act as seriously about swimming like Rin does? How is Rin going to make it this year being Captain and trying to achieve at Nationals? WHO IS SOUSOKE!?  … and those muscles.

More than ever am I glad to be able to watch Free again, and I look forward to this Eternal Summer!

Our Hiatus

So, this whole college adjusting to college thing is a lot harder to handle what Tyler and I thought it would be, and yes the blog will take a hit from it. We will no longer be posting reviews for the summer season n here. BUT what we will do is tweet and tumble about the anime we are watching, and then at the end of the summer season we will write up a recap and announce the 2 shows we will review for the fall season.  We will start regular posting in the fall!

So! What anime series are you looking forward to watching this fall??

Silver Spoon Ep 5 – Review

tumblr_mr93gtGGVb1qk86dvo1_500

Crop circles, snacks, and stealth: It’s a new episode of Silver Spoon!

The episode leads off with Hachi and Keiji running through a field and then being approached by a lot of lights over the horizon. Time then rewinds to earlier that day, when the group all sees a giant crop circle in one of the fields. When they get back to the school, they all circle around a computer and fight about what it might be.

Meanwhile, Keiji gets a call that “it” is going to be in “area 51” at 9pm that night. They then begin to formulate a plan to go out in see it, a plan that runs into hitch after hitch. They get spotted while sneaking out, but manage to get away into the forest.

One by one the group dwindles down, be it from strawberry thieves, ripped pants, or policemen with dogs. Eventually they get to “Area 51”, which is in the middle of the field. Lights show up (this is the same scene from the beginning), and it turns out, to Hachi’s surprise, to be a tractor.

As it turns out, Keiji and everybody else knew what it was. This was a very good episode, and the tension was kept high, even though it obviously wasn’t aliens. :b We’re really excited to see where this show is going to go!

CATCH-UP Joint Reviews: Servant X Service – Ep 4&5 Silver Spoon Ep 3&4

tumblr_mr337e4Dm51qeoygio1_500

Episode 4 of SxS might as well be called the Hasabe and Lucy shipping episode. Chihaya declares herself Hasabe’s rival, and keeps warning Lucy to be on the look out for his real intentions. As the day goes on, the group meets the section leader, who comes to work as a remote control rabbit. After being chastised by everyone, he suggests they all go out drinking together. The episode ends with Lucy being drunk, and Hasabe taking her home. Where this will take us, nobody knows.

Episode 5 starts off with Lucy waking up in a house, and a girl sleeping next to her. The girl wakes up and says she is Hasabe and not to tell anybody at the office about being female. BUT IT’S A JOKE… seriously our jaws dropped though. The REAL Hasabe walks in and you find out the girl was Hasabe’s older sister. She is also shipping Hasabe and Lucy 😉 You also have another jaw dropping moment when Chihaya admits she is Taishi’s girlfriend, but it’s laugh off by everyone in the office. But really … Chihaya and Taishi are dating. You see their relationship outside the office hiding that they are dating even in front of Toko. It will be fun when that unravels in front of the office

Now getting back to Harvest Moo….I mean….Silver Spoon. First, we learn about pigs. Then about Ban’ei races. Hachiken still has the feels for Ali, and tensions get a little hot with Ichirou. Also! You meet some of Ali’s family, learn a little about being a vet, and learn some more about Ichirou. That’s about where episode 3 ends.

Episode 4 starts out with Hachiken getting the top test results in his class. He then proceeds to find a brick oven, and gets everybody in the mood for fresh pizza, something they’ve apparently gone without their entire lives. He then goes about collecting the ingredients, a journey that has several humorous twists. He ends up needing the help of a lot of people, so he has to make a lot of pizzas. Of course, it all ends well, and the pizza is delicious. Even the teachers love it.

Update – Tokyo in Tulsa, anime, and life

So! There has been a lack of reviews from the past week, which Tyler and I are sorry about. This week was Tyler’s last week of his summer job, and I had a lot of overtime this week. So, we weren’t able to watch that much anime. We were also getting ready of Tokyo in Tulsa which was a BLAST! We met up with some pretty awesome people and did our favorite thing, talk about anime. Maybe there is A-Kon in our future ? Ay?

Tyler and I are also getting ready for college to start up again. So our lives will be full of packing and buying expensive textbooks for the next two weeks. We both go off different weeks so you will see post only by me or him so we don’t get behind again. August will just be an interesting month of an adjustment for both of us!

Just to catch up right now, we are going to post all of our reviews for the past week in one big post! They will be not as detailed and shorten, but this will make it easier for us to write and for you to read!

Free! Ep 4 – Review

tumblr_mqht1jsJ1a1qz70k9o5_1280

It’s finally happened…Rei learned to swim! It was a slow and embarrassing (albeit entertaining) journey, and it didn’t happen overnight.

As the show kicks off, our fabulous foursome is having their first real swim of the year in the pool at their school. It’s still cold though, and at this point Rei still can’t swim. Nagisa thinks that they should all get matching uniforms. Everyone thinks it’s a good idea except for Gou/Kou, who has come up with a training regimen to get the group ready for the tournament. It includes one particularly daunting task, however: Teaching Rei to swim within a week.

The training is slow going, and it seems like Rei is getting nowhere anytime soon. He thinks that his speedo might be to blame, so everyone heads out to buy new swimsuits. Once they are at the sportswear store, they all begin to try out different swimsuits, and it turns into a giant female fanservice montage.  Haru runs into Rin as they both come out of the fitting room at the same time, and tells him that he wants to talk.

Haru finds out that Rin doesn’t fell that his win against Haru counts, because Rin is in much better shape than Haru is, and wants a rematch. Haru then promises to swim for Rin, but only if Rin promises not to quit swimming if he loses. He agrees, and then storms off. The rest of the group comes out, and then head back to the school to keep teaching Rei how to swim.

After Rei continues to embarrass himself, Haru finally agrees to teach him. After spending all that time learning from him, Rei is disappointed when he still can’t swim. They open up to each other though, when Haru tells him that he isn’t free. Something finally clicks in his head, and the next time the group comes to the pool, they find Rei there already swimming. He was doing the butterfly stroke, which he refused to do because he didn’t see the beauty in it until after his conversation with Haru.

The show was FULL of ab rippling shots, of course, but we have the confrontation and race between Rei and Haru to look forward to. Next week’s episode looks kinda like a filler as the swim club  goes on vacation.
